Greece today is formally known as the Hellenic Republic. The official language in Greece is Greek and the population, as of 2004 is 11,018,000. The currency used today in Greece is the Euro. The current President is Karlos Papoulias.

Greece has a mixed capitalist economy with a total GDP of $230.684 billion, and a per capita GDP of $18,722. Tourism provides a large portion of Greece's GDP and foreign exchange earnings: the Greek economy has moved from an Agricultural country to a Service based country, as the Services sector contributes approximately 59% to Greece's GDP.

Scuba DiversGreece's geography is beautiful: Greece is a country in Southern Europe, located at the tip of the Balkan Peninsula. It has land boundaries with Bulgaria, Albania and Turkey. The Aegean Sea runs along the East of Greece and the Ionian and Mediterranean Sea run along the West and South of Greece. The total area of Greece is 310,000 square kilometers: 136,000 square kilometers of which are land (mainland and islands), and 174,000 square kilometers form the Aegean basin and islets.

Greece is made up of approximately 4,000 islands, the largest of which are Crete and Evia. The remaining islands are divided into 6 groups:

  2. the Dodecanese
  3. the Islands of the Northern Eastern Aegean
  4. the Sporades
  5. the Ionian
  6. the Saronic Gulf Islands
